Stop dog killing before the European Games in Baku

Addressed to: Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and 2 more

In the Center for Stray Animals, in Baku, we can find cages where the dogs are kept before authorities in Azerbaijan burn them to death in order to clean the streets before the European Games next summer. This is not the first time that before an Olympic event a government kill the homeless dogs by poisoning, shooting, or burning in an effort to “cleanse” the cities. Special ovens have been built where the bodies of homeless dogs are burnt after being brutally shot in public, Azerbaijani information site Virtualaz.org reports.

The head of the Azerbaijani NGO “Alliance to protect the fauna”, Mansura Rasulzade thinks that this sort of worldwide event should not be allowed to be hosted in “a country that killed 79000 dogs”. “Well, this means that the country is in quarantine, and there is a real threat of epidemics,” the Azerbaijani expert warns.

This is not the first time that the Azerbaijani government take similar measures to liquidate thousands of homeless dogs, they did the same in 2011, before the Eurovision Song Contest of 2012.

We, the undersigned, demands that the Azerbaijani Government to cease the killing and burning of homeless dogs. We also demands to the European Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee that the future host cities should present a plan about the homeless dogs management policies to ensure that no more dogs are going to be assassinated by any government. The organizers, sponsors and host countries are equally responsible for this killings and that’s why we ask everybody to be part of the change in order to avoid new dog massacres.
