After becoming aware of the "Azores Aquarius", an initiative that, as reported by the media, will have an investment of 15.5 million Euros and is currently undergoing licensing. Also according to the same news, the project is a private initiative, but it will apply for EU funds, ie all the money used for the project will be ours. My message is opposition to this project because:
- From what we know today about conscious animals, we know that life in captivity is absolutely incompatible with the welfare levels equivalent to those that would have in their natural habitat;
- The very beginning of profiting from animals in captivity seems to me a perversion of what should be respect for nature and the planet;
- Local exploitation of animals, such as zoos, aquariums or others, are being increasingly considered controversial by the world, either by the public or the scientific community.
These sites aim to bring joy to humans, profits for investment firms and possible regional promotion, but at what cost? The truth is that this "fun" comes from an anti-pedagogical perspective of how they should be maintained and bred these animals. The international community must unite to challenge this million-dollar project, and to prevent the region have a negative promotion.
