Punish the animal abuse

In Spain it needed tougher Laws against animal abuse. There is an amendment to the Penal Code in which a person is sentenced to a term of up to 18 months when the abuse causes the death of the animal, but I think that is not enough, many cases of abuse do not end in death and they are not less terrible. Furthermore, our current legislation is not applicable in all the country, so it can serve as a reference on this subject, so each region legislates at will, that's why each sanction is different according to the place where the crime is committed.

Fines of € 300 for mistreating an animal is ridiculous when is compared to the damage that it causes to animals. We say that € 300 for the suffering of a pet that was mutilated by its owner is good enough? How can we measure their suffering, how can we think that money is enough for that person to think twice before he could mistreat an animal again?

Abandonment is also animal abuse, and we have more than 150000 abandoned animals every year in our country. And it seems that that will not change in the near future because our Laws are outdated, inadequate and harmless.

Last year we had the first person sentenced to prison for animal abuse. A man who killed his horse because he did not win a race. He was sentenced to prison, yes, bravo, but finally the Court of Palma ordered his release in exchange for participating in a program of animal protection. Now, beat his horse to death, the Justice send him to prison, but then they released him and send him to work with animals. No sir, this will not deter anyone, this way of enforcing the Law will not make people stop mistreating their animals because until there is no person who spends all the prison sentence in jail, no one really cared about what it could happen if is convicted for mistreating an animal.

Spain does not have a framework Law to unify the Laws of the autonomous communities, so there are 17 different ways to legislate the same problem. How can it be that what something is a crime in Catalonia and is not in Madrid?

We need a real change, we need to toughen the punishment for abuse, we need to fight all these changes, it is the only way to decrease animal abuse. Because no living being deserves to be abused.
