Gran Canaria's Endemic and Savage Goat Declared as Protected Species

Addressed to: Government of Canary Islands and 1 more

From SOS Cabras Gran Canaria we defend the wild goats of our island, Gran Canaria. We did not expect that, in 2016, the Cabildo Insular, in the name and representation of the great canaries, decided to hire four snipers to kill a herd, which is already small in number, on a surface of approximately 20 square kilometers, and whose specimens also have a very important pre-Hispanic genetic history. There has been anomalous secrecy in this case, because it is now that we have learned that the wild goats on the island were killed, not for the publicity they had to give – in order to avoid scaring the surrounding population of the zones of action – but because tourists who were practicing mountaineering asked the locals what was happening, “that they heard shots and were finding dead and wounded goats in the paths for which they were running.” And this is how the people of Agaete learned first of all, and thanks to social networks and citizen action, the actions and practices carried out by our environmental defenders were transcended.

As soon as we became aware of the extermination of the goats in our mountains, we mobilized so that it stopped immediately and that this was not total. It is not true, as the Cabildo affirms, that the goat is ending with endemisms such as, among others, cedar. Although, if this is the case, it would be a question of finding solutions that would respect the lives of goats, which exist - such as putting a metal fence – but which do not need to be applied because everything is part of an intentionally false premise that seeks to justify its acting for spurious purposes. Yes, that mighty knight.

The aim of SOS Cabras Gran Canaria is to claim the protection of these beautiful animals in the territory of the Canary Islands and, therefore, the wild endangered goat of Gran Canaria, so that they continue to inhabit it in the way in which they have always done it, free. The goat has been introduced into the Canary Islands since ancient times, since it dates from the aboriginal colonization; that is to say, time back, to year 313 of our Age, reason why it goes back to two millenia. The goats of the island of Gran Canaria have generated neoendemisms of undoubted genetic value that makes them unique in the place, as well as the cultural interest and appreciation of the Canarian society towards these living beings. Keeping the goat in the ecosystem, the function of spreading of seeds is achieved so that these grow in the rest of the territory through which they transit: fertilize the land. Likewise, when the goat feeds, it never extinguishes a plant - nor endemism -, but it grazes it; that is, pruning or eating the ends of the flora in question.

Therefore, the reality that the goat damages the endemic flora of the island does not obey the reality. So they have not dared to try it, because they know it is not true. It is very complicated to discuss with the insular institution for motivated reasons, as is the knowledge by the institution itself of its nullifying argumentative virtuality to achieve its goals. In fact, through their network of acolytes - false experts - they give more impact to people and groups that may be in favor of their goals, and this is because it benefits them also collaterally, thus creating a parallel reality based on the lie.

The study of the goat of Gran Canaria and the Canaries in general must be studied in depth, because up to now we are in an incipient phase, in which a serious, rigorous and impartial investigation has not been carried out. For this reason, the Cabildo of the island resorts to explanations of fat brush and refuses to speak with the groups of civil society. Only give a dialogue with those who know that they will put little or no resistance and, also, with banquet waiting for them after the talk. It is an insult to the intelligence of the Canarian people.

For this reason, as has been shown before, using false and twisted arguments without reliable evidence that support them seek to confuse the Canary population, through the greatest tool of control: fear. A vile strategy and especially if projected by the people who have been chosen to represent us. Through the procedure of repetition of a lie, they convert a nonexistent problem into another that remains non-existent, but which through this artifice is considered a real and imminent problem. In addition, this procedure has another phase, once the danger has been understood as real and imminent, the institutions patiently wait for the people to demand an immediate solution, and then to appear to be the professionals who are responsible for solving problems that are not existent and self-generated . To undertake this task can not be done exclusively from the insular institution, but through the participation in collusion of his acolytes; that is to say, personalities who occupy positions in institutions and who claim to be intendants in the matter, which is part of a massive reiteration of lies in the media regarding the alleged damage to endemisms in flora, as is that invention of unlawful acts on the graffiti that have appeared in the different regional media, with the message "Dead goat, match set." However, it has become clear that these graffiti belong to acts performed in the Iberian peninsula, specifically in Cantabria, whose images have been used by this institution to accuse the people defending goats.

Anything goes for this institution with a voracious economic hunger. And all this to receive economic items from the European Union, which will be known for what real purposes will be used. If you are going to be employed as formerly, in ineffective policies that only achieve a distribution of money between private concessionary companies, formed by friends and family; or public companies characterized by the same configuration notes as the private one.

If we apply logic to so much string of fallacious arguments, they collapse by themselves. Firstly they state that they kill the goats at a distance because of the abrupt orography of the place, and yet they intend to reforest that same inaccessible area, the one that is snatched from the goats. It is also well known how the Cabildo reforestation programs, after planting the endemisms, allow them to dry without water supplies and substrates required in their incipient stage of growth, when they are more vulnerable. There is an intentional desire that it be the story of never ending, or rather, of never starting, to receive economic aid that will stop where it is already known collectively.

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria paralyzed the indiscriminate killing of wild goats, thanks to the response of the civil society that worried and mobilized, as well as the different groups that expressed themselves and expressed their repulsion for such vile behavior. It has not been because the insular institution has believed in the manifesto, such as the international agreements signed by Spain, which has to be enforced in the territory, perhaps because it does not lose political revenue.

It has been requested in writing to the Cabildo of Gran Canaria a meeting with those responsible for the environment, to send them our proposals and provide possible solutions to their problems - which we understand to be illusory, such as fencing, fencing of the young endemic plant and other measures without having to displace and, much less kill, the goats in the place where they have always coexisted with the natural environment and man.

For this reason, SOS Cabras Gran Canaria will direct all efforts, using all available mechanisms, to claim the declaration of the wild goat of the island of Gran Canaria, an endemic species protected before the insular and autonomous institutions, so that is given the above protection; that is, before the performance of the human being himself.

With its support through the signature in this petition we are closer, as a Canarian society, to avoid the loss of the genetic and cultural heritage of the endemic and wild goat of Gran Canaria.

P.D .: Proverb: “The righteous take care of their animals, but the wicked always are cruel.

Thank you for fighting together in this cause.

Receive an affectionate greeting,

SOS CABRAS GRAN CANARIA
